A dramatic rescue mission unfolded when the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Fox 1 aviation crew saved a man stranded atop his overturned truck in Arizona floodwaters. The incident took place in Tonopah, where rapidly moving waters surrounded the vehicle.
Deputies discovered the man sitting on the truck with muddy floodwaters rushing past. Given the hazardous conditions, reaching the man directly was deemed too risky. Consequently, first responders opted for a ‘hoist rescue,’ deploying a crew member from the helicopter to secure the man with a rescue harness and elevate him to safety.
“As opposed to when we first got there, you can see the water line on the video — it’s below the window — and it had risen up to the top of the window,” helicopter pilot Rich Dickner remarked, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Video footage released by the sheriff’s office captured the tense moments, showing the swift action of Deputy Lindsey Smith, who was lowered approximately 80 feet to the vehicle, initially struggling to gain her footing amid the conditions.
The rescue was completed in under five minutes, a result of the crew’s rapid response and expertise. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office commended the aviation team for their skillful and quick action, ensuring the man’s safe transfer to the riverbank, where fire personnel awaited. “Thanks to the skill and quick response of our Aviation crew, the subject was safely brought to shore,” remarked the sheriff’s office.
The rescue took place amidst historic rainfall in the Desert Southwest, with remnants of Hurricane Polo triggering flash floods. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County urges motorists to avoid flooded roads, advising, “Remember: Conditions can change fast. If you encounter a flooded roadway, Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
