MLB Considers Game in Grand Teton National Park, Drawing Federal Attention

Major League Baseball (MLB) is considering its next major event away from urban stadiums, in the scenic Grand Teton National Park. Special neutral-site games have previously been successful for MLB. However, the idea of using federal land for a game prompted concerns in Washington.

In an official statement, the White House acknowledged that MLB had approached President Donald Trump’s administration about hosting a game in a national park, similar to the Field of Dreams event in Iowa. The statement emphasized that this concept is neither a Presidential directive nor influenced by the White House or the Department of Interior.

“Therefore, this is not a White House or Administration priority,” the statement added.

The National Park Service has not issued any permits, and MLB hasn’t finalized any venue plans. While MLB has the option to explore national park sites, there is no endorsement from Washington yet. Concerns over potential wildlife encounters, such as grizzly bears, remain a consideration.

Previous MLB specialty games have been popular, including the Field of Dreams game in Iowa, the Little League Classic in Pennsylvania, and a historic game at Rickwood Field in Alabama. The league also transformed Bristol Motor Speedway for a game in 2025.

Deputy Director Frank Lands of the National Park Service reportedly visited Grand Teton to inspect potential sites. However, the White House later clarified that his visit was part of a routine park tour rather than scouting for baseball venues.

Attempting to convert a federal maintenance area into a large-scale television event presents challenges. It involves logistical issues like setting up temporary structures, managing high traffic, and ensuring that animals such as bison and elk are kept safe and away.

Such a project requires environmental assessments, public commentaries, and extensive bureaucratic procedures. Given that MLB’s 2027 special-events schedule is already established, the earliest a game could occur in Grand Teton would be 2028.
