An elderly delivery driver in Texas gained widespread attention for his perseverance and the reason behind his continued work. Donald Johnson, 81, has been delivering lost luggage for three years to support his wife’s medical needs.

On one particular day, Erin Howell, a resident at The Colony, noticed Johnson struggling to carry a heavy bag up steep stairs, as captured by her doorbell camera. Learning about his situation, she discovered that Johnson works to pay for his wife Josephine’s cancer treatment.

Donald and Josephine have been married for 57 years. Despite his age, Donald persists in working due to difficulty finding other employment.

After their encounter, Howell shared Johnson’s story online, which inspired numerous individuals to contribute to an initiative aiming to cover medical expenses and enable Johnson to retire.

“It’s the only job that will hire me,” Donald Johnson explained to Howell.

The campaign began with optimism. Thousands of strangers offered donations and support through messages.

Johnson expressed gratitude, stating, “I think I’m going to be able to stop working, and that’s amazing.” Meanwhile, Josephine felt encouraged by the prayers and support.

However, the fundraising faced a setback. A TikTok video from their daughter, Amy Johnson, revealed the campaign raised over $700,000 but was halted due to a technical issue. Donations are being refunded.

GoFundMe informed FOX 4 that its trust and safety team found the fundraiser violated service terms, although the specific reason remains undisclosed.

The family appreciated the overwhelming support aimed at relieving their situation during Josephine’s pancreatic cancer battle and helping Donald cease working.
