Bill Maher Criticizes Far-Left Over Mask Policy Backlash at Massachusetts Bar

Comedian Bill Maher recently addressed ongoing controversies surrounding a Massachusetts bar’s decision to make masks optional one night per week. Last Ditch Bar and Arts Venue, located in Greenfield, faced criticism after the Boston Globe reported backlash regarding its relaxation of mask mandates.

During a segment of HBO’s “Real Time,” Maher commented on the situation at the bar, known for its progressive stance. The establishment describes itself as welcoming to various communities including “dykes, transsexuals, gender freaks, workers, and friends.” Maher humorously noted the order of priorities, with “workers and friends” listed after others.

The bar, according to the Boston Globe, has been experiencing financial difficulties, with more patrons unable to cover the entrance fee. Despite the cover charge, the bar remained accessible to those unable to pay, including the homeless, but not to the police.

In response to declining income, the bar decided to lift its mask requirement on Saturdays in hopes of drawing a larger crowd. This decision, however, was met with swift backlash. Local residents expressed their disapproval at a community meeting, questioning the decision and the role of a white therapist acting as a mediator during discussions.

Maher criticized the far-left patrons for their lack of tolerance towards the bar’s decision, highlighting statements made by critics such as “People like you kill disabled people in the name of your own leisure and convenience,” and “I hope your venue gets firebombed.” He commented on the pervasive level of hatred expressed by critics.

He suggested that many perceive this backlash as an extension of authoritarian sentiments surrounding COVID-19 policies. Graham indicated that Maher often targets perceived hypocrisy among liberals who advocate tolerance but act intolerantly.

Maher, who at times has been critical of both religious and political fundamentalism, continues to voice his opinions on left-wing issues despite his previous support for figures like Barack Obama.
