The cause of death for actress Hayden Panettiere has been officially determined by South Carolina authorities. The ruling indicates she died from the toxic effects of multiple drugs, with her death classified as accidental. This conclusion provides answers after weeks of speculation surrounding the passing of the former star of Heroes and Nashville.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office states Panettiere’s death resulted from the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. The manner of death was considered accidental, as the autopsy found no signs of trauma or foul play.

Details from the Coroner’s Report

A 911 call reporting cardiac arrest was made on August 16 at approximately 1:51 p.m. Emergency personnel quickly arrived at a residence on Easley Bridge Road in Greenville. Panettiere was found in cardiac arrest. Despite advanced life support measures, resuscitation efforts failed, and she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

Investigators noted Panettiere was temporarily staying at the residence where she died. The coroner’s office partnered with the Greenville City Police Department for a parallel investigation. The autopsy revealed no traumatic injuries, ruling out external causes such as violence.

Substances Identified in Toxicology Report

The toxicology report highlighted fentanyl as a contributor to Panettiere’s death. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid often linked to the overdose crisis in the United States due to its potency in illicit and counterfeit drugs. 4-ANPP, a chemical related to fentanyl production, was also identified.

Other drugs contributing to death included alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. Alprazolam, known as Xanax, is prescribed for anxiety disorders. Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant, and quetiapine treats bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder. Officials did not specify dosages or how the drugs entered her system.
