Seahawks Coach Mike Macdonald and the Broncos Incident

During an interview with Graham Bensinger, Macdonald shared that he discovered about 100 plays posted by fans on X, filmed during Broncos’ training-camp sessions in 2024. With his first game of the season against Denver, Macdonald used these plays for strategizing. This approach paid off when Seattle secured a 26-20 victory in Russell Wilson’s return to Lumen Field.

Sean Payton did not appreciate the scouting methods of the Seahawks. Macdonald recounted that Payton became aware of their access to the plays via social media midseason and reacted strongly.

He called [Seahawks general manager John Schnedier] and basically threatened to come out publicly and do a whole Patriots Spygate type of thing, Macdonald said.

The situation escalated, but Payton refrained from going public after Schneider’s threat of legal action. This feud resulted in a tense, yet silent, standoff between the teams.

At the NFL Combine, Macdonald had an unexpected encounter with Payton. Expecting a confrontation, Macdonald instead faced a passive response from Payton, who seemed to have moved on from the incident.

Macdonald maintains that his actions were not akin to Spygate as it involved publicly available information without intent to break any rules.

Payton’s reputation took another hit due to his history with controversies such as the Saints’ Bountygate scandal, which led to his suspension in 2012.

Macdonald’s account suggests he didn’t need to resort to shortcuts. He has achieved success, underscored by winning a Super Bowl.
