“They don’t feel powerful at all, and they feel lonely,” Murphy said. “Government should build rules where people feel more powerful.”

Murphy proposes regulating the internet to decrease isolation. Spending less time alone on social media platforms could make individuals less vulnerable to demagogues. He emphasizes that solutions to increase connectivity and empowerment are generally non-partisan.

“Regulating the internet should be an important government project,” Murphy advised. “Feeling more powerful and less lonely can decrease susceptibility to demagogues.”

Artificial Intelligence Concerns

Discussions around AI regulation have emerged. Republican lawmakers suggest that technology experts, not Congress, should oversee it. Florida Representative Jimmy Patronis expressed that AI offers incredible potential, like curing cancer, but requires oversight.

“AI is going to cure cancer. It needs oversight,” Patronis remarked, “but Congress may lack expertise to regulate emerging technology.”
