President Donald Trump addressed reports regarding Chinese surveillance and its alleged assistance to Iran during a conversation with reporters on Air Force One. The comments followed a Wall Street Journal report suggesting Chinese entities provided satellite imagery to Iran before a missile attack on a Jordanian airbase.
Trump stated, “They basically do what we do,” in reference to China spying on the U.S. He acknowledged, “You know what they say? That China spies on us. I say you’re right, and we spy on them, too.” Trump emphasized a mutual understanding, suggesting both countries engage in similar surveillance actions.
When queried about addressing this issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping during an upcoming visit to the U.S., Trump remarked that Xi has “behaved reasonably well,” and he noted that “we [the U.S.] behave reasonably well” in return.
The report highlighted a connection between the satellite imagery and the July 17 missile strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, which resulted in the deaths of three U.S. troops. This link was described as significant evidence of China’s indirect support to Iran, having lethal outcomes for American forces.
President Xi Jinping is expected to attend a summit in Washington on September 24. There was no direct accusation of Beijing’s involvement in the attacks, and U.S. officials did not name any specific Chinese entities involved.
