Bob Mackie, the celebrated costume designer famed for his dazzling and iconic creations, has passed away at the age of 87. His work dressed some of the biggest names in pop culture including Cher, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Beyoncé, and Miley Cyrus.
A tribute on Mackie’s official Instagram page confirmed his death on Monday. Details about the cause of death or the location were not provided.
“He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do,” said the statement. “His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”
Born in Monterey Park, Mackie was a highly decorated designer with several Emmy Awards and a Tony Award to his credit. His career began in the early 1960s, and over the years, he crafted gowns for Diana Ross and the Supremes, as well as outfits for Joan Rivers, Barbra Streisand, and Elton John.
Mackie is also well-known for his work with “The Carol Burnett Show” and his enduring collaboration with pop icon Cher. He designed for her in the “If I Could Turn Back Time” music video and numerous red carpet appearances.
