Trump Supports Unified Ireland Amid Calls for UK’s Constitutional Change

President Donald Trump has voiced support for the unification of Ireland during a meeting in Dublin. This stance emerges shortly after UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham dismissed the idea of referendums in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The leaders from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have called on the British government to prepare for constitutional changes that could result in the dissolution of the United Kingdom. This development follows Trump’s remarks expressing a desire to see a unified Ireland.

“Westminster’s time is coming to an end,”

declared Scottish First Minister John Swinney, Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth, and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill in a joint statement made in Cardiff. These nationalist party leaders aim to strengthen cooperation and push for constitutional reform.

During his stay in Dublin, Trump commented on the situation in Northern Ireland, stating: “It’s going to happen eventually. It might as well happen now.” On the following day, he reiterated his support for merging the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, suggesting it is a logical step.

By the beginning of the week, the nationalist leaders released a memorandum of understanding focused on driving constitutional change. They emphasized that no Westminster government should hinder democratic decisions made by Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.

The leaders stated: “Each of our nations has the right to determine its own future, through democratic means and in accordance with the wishes of its people.” They highlighted the unprecedented commitment to independence from the UK by the First Ministers in these regions.

Sinn Féin, the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, warned Burnham that he could not prevent the breakup of the UK. Michelle O’Neill emphasized that Westminster does not serve their people’s interests effectively.

The memorandum also outlines intentions for cooperation on economic policies, renewable energy, and restoring ties with the European Union. It calls for increased self-determination and equal collaboration among the nations.

A spokesperson for Burnham emphasized his commitment to promoting unity within the UK. They noted that the Prime Minister prioritizes economic security and easing financial pressures over engaging in constitutional discussions or referendums.
