Washington — Republican Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky made his return to Capitol Hill after a three-month absence. This return follows speculation about his health.
McConnell, 84, entered the Senate chamber in a wheelchair and participated in a vote on a judicial nomination. He last voted on June 11 before his office announced hospitalization following his fall. Emergency personnel responded to his home for an unconscious person, according to public EMS dispatch.
Prior to the vote, McConnell stated: “Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since my fall in June. I’m looking forward to being on the Senate floor and seeing my colleagues.” He added his intention to return to work and complete tasks for the congressional session.
Throughout his absence, McConnell communicated with staff and Republican colleagues over the phone, though details of his condition remained sparse.
The Kentucky Republican faced health challenges in recent years. After a fall in 2023, he suffered a concussion requiring hospitalization. Later, he exhibited freezing episodes during press interactions twice. Another fall in 2024 resulted in minor injuries, and in February, he was hospitalized for flu-like symptoms.
McConnell said: “My recovery has been long and frustrating, impacted by the lingering effects of childhood polio.” He assured continued engagement in his duties while undergoing physical therapy. He’s set to retire early next year, not seeking reelection.
