Stefon Diggs’ Celebration Costs Washington Commanders

The most surprising moment in the NFL’s Week 1 came from Stefon Diggs. His touchdown celebration negatively impacted his team. A top route runner, Diggs scored a 10-yard touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles. He outsmarted cornerback Cooper DeJean to get wide open for the score.

After his touchdown, Diggs celebrated in a controversial way. He embraced the goal post, mimicking an old Antonio Brown move. The NFL prohibits using the goal post as a prop, so he earned an immediate penalty.

As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I was like this: ‘Oh, I forgot,’ Diggs said. He reflected on the rule change during a post-game interview.

Diggs joined the league in 2015, long after the rule was introduced in 2006. His action wasn’t legal at any time during his career.

The Commanders were trailing 17-9 when Diggs scored. The penalty influenced the team’s decisions. Coach Dan Quinn could have opted for a two-point conversion to tie the game at 17, rather than an extra point that made it 17-16.

The Commanders eventually lost 24-22 due to the failed later attempt at a two-point conversion. An earlier successful attempt could have altered the game’s outcome.

Quinn discussed the incident with Diggs, acknowledging Diggs knows better about game situations.

You’ve just got to be smarter, quarterback Jayden Daniels said. He emphasized the importance of situational awareness.

Despite blaming himself for the lack of reminders, Daniels didn’t foresee such a celebration. Quinn reiterated Diggs’ competitive nature, stating the player knows the rules.

Diggs’ actions had consequences. His penalty prevented a potential game-tying moment. It was a costly mistake.
