On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump attended the Irish Open golf tournament at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, Ireland. During the event, he responded to concerns raised by tech leaders about artificial intelligence (AI) possibly going rogue. Trump minimized these fears, stating that warnings about AI were overstated and influenced by unspecified “negative forces.” He emphasized the U.S. leadership in AI compared to China and expressed the need to maintain this edge. Trump said, “We’re leading China in AI; we’re the most sophisticated country in the world.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union, echoed Trump’s sentiments. He opposed a moratorium on AI technology advancements, warning that such a pause would allow China to surpass the U.S. Johnson urged tech companies to take responsibility for developing safer AI. He cautioned against Congress implementing emergency regulations, citing a threat to U.S. competitiveness.
Those remarks followed an essay posted by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Saturday. Amodei advocated for slowing down AI capability enhancements, warning of risks such as loss of control over AI systems, cyberattacks, and bioterrorism. He supported international cooperation in AI development and proposed independent evaluations in AI labs.
Tech leaders Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed agreement with Amodei’s concerns on social media. Altman, in an interview with Fortune Magazine released Saturday, mentioned delaying OpenAI’s public offering until at least 2027 due to safety concerns. Altman also indicated potential pauses in AI testing to ensure safer technology.
David Sacks, co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, responded to Altman and Amodei’s propositions. He supported their decision to be responsible but challenged their motivations for slowing down, pointing out potential product-liability risks if AI-enabled cyberattacks occur.
