President Donald Trump criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for their behavior at the 9/11 Memorial. Trump described their actions as “terrible” and “inappropriate” when they appeared to laugh during the solemn reading of victims’ names.

Trump expressed his disapproval by stating, “I think it’s terrible. It’s not a place to be laughing, especially in that case.” He added, “The fact that they were laughing together at a very important part of the ceremony was inappropriate.” His comments followed a widely circulated video showing Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani engaging in what appeared to be a lighthearted moment at Ground Zero, which sparked significant criticism online.

A television broadcast from the ceremony showed a young man overwhelmed with emotion near the memorial, followed by footage of Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez smiling and seeming to laugh. Although their conversation was inaudible, the timing drew backlash from viewers.

A video of the incident spread rapidly on social media, with critics accusing the pair of showing disrespect on a profoundly solemn day.

Rep. Wesley Hunt from Texas commented on the incident on social media, writing, “As the names of Americans murdered on September 11th are read aloud at Ground Zero, AOC and Mamdani are laughing and smiling together.” He continued, “There is a time and a place for politics. This isn’t it. Ground Zero is sacred ground.” Hunt added, “September 11 is not a photo op, it is not a networking event.”

Moreover, Meghan McCain reacted to the video, questioning on social media, “Why are these two laughing?” Similarly, New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, a Republican, criticized the moment, remarking, “After thousands of families of victims of terror beg Mamdani not to show up, he stands there and laughs while families weep.” Vernikov remarked, “This is NYC’s Mayor.”

Mamdani’s presence at the memorial was already contentious due to opposition from some victims’ families. Over 110,000 individuals signed a petition urging him to stay away from Ground Zero, but Mamdani chose to attend and remained throughout the ceremony.

Michael Ragusa, a member of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s circle, contested the narrative that Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez were joking during the ceremony. He posted, “The videos of [them] laughing are not true. I was standing next to them the whole time.” He added, “The camera just caught her greeting him hello. Multiple other politicians were laughing and joking behind me, both Republicans and Democrats.” Ragusa noted that Mamdani stood somberly at various points during the event.
