The Detroit Lions narrowly avoided a franchise-worst collapse against the New Orleans Saints, securing a dramatic victory in overtime to kick off their 2026 NFL season. Initially, it seemed like an easy win for the Lions, who held a comfortable lead until the Saints staged a fierce comeback.
With 1:07 left in regulation, Juwan Johnson propelled the Saints forward by catching a touchdown, leveling the score and pushing the game into overtime. Although Saints kicker Daniel Carlson attempted a 62-yard field goal at the last moment, he missed, marking the season’s first overtime game.
During overtime, both teams continued to exchange touchdowns. Amon-Ra St. Brown set the momentum for the Lions with a scoring play. However, Saints tight end Noah Fant responded with a touchdown of his own. Rather than tying the game, New Orleans coach Kellen Moore opted for a two-point conversion in pursuit of victory.
“We wanted the win, not a tie,” said Moore. His risky decision placed the pressure squarely on the Lions’ defense.
The Saints’ offensive drive, culminating in an 80-yard push, was met with determined resistance from Detroit’s defense. When quarterback Tyler Shough attempted a pass to rookie Bryce Lance, the Lions managed to disrupt the play, sending Ford Field into elated cheers.
A loss would have spelled historical defeat for Detroit, marking their largest lead given up. With ambitions high in the NFC North, avoiding such an outcome was crucial for the Lions.
While the Lions celebrated their win, they acknowledged their need for defensive improvements. Jahmyr Gibbs stood out offensively, capitalizing on increased opportunities following David Montgomery’s departure. Gibbs amassed 156 rushing yards, scored two touchdowns, and caught five passes for an additional 30 yards, cementing his status as a key offensive asset.
The Saints showed resilience late in the game. Shough’s performance included passing for 410 yards and two interceptions by the Detroit defense. Nevertheless, Chris Olave excelled with ten receptions, earning 182 yards.
Looking ahead, the Lions seek to enhance their defense, grounded by their offense’s strengths. Their hard-earned victory garners confidence, indicating their potential in the league.
