Mississippi authorities have detained a 51-year-old man for murder following the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four. She was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home. This arrest comes after significant media coverage and online discussions due to the historical context of racial violence in the state. Jarques Ratliff, a Black resident of Jackson with a personal connection to Fortune, is the identified suspect.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced Ratliff’s arrest during a news conference. He was taken into custody without incident on Capitol Street. The arrest ensued after search warrants were executed at related properties. Brackney highlighted that while this arrest is a crucial development, the investigation will continue as they pursue additional leads.

Fortune’s body was discovered on August 3 at a vacant property in Jackson. Although investigators interviewed many individuals and examined various evidence over the past month, they waited for the Medical Examiner’s Office to classify the death as a homicide before making any arrest. Once classified, the Jackson Police executed search warrants and arrested Ratliff.
Chief Brackney recognized public scrutiny concerning the case. She stressed that their actions are guided strictly by physical evidence. This clarity was necessary due to Mississippi’s historical backdrop, but the department remains focused on ensuring all public statements are evidence-based.

Brackney also addressed false social media narratives, clarifying no other individuals had been officially designated as suspects before Ratliff’s apprehension. She emphasized that the police did not identify a 65-year-old as a suspect, despite rumors.
Christy Spivey, Fortune’s mother, was informed of the arrest and homicide ruling. She expressed appreciation for the police efforts and affirmed her belief that her daughter did not die by suicide. The family maintains Fortune had no tendency towards self-harm.

Family accounts and a Kentucky obituary highlight Fortune’s background. Raised in Kentucky, she bypassed her junior high school year and excelled as a cross-country runner. A strong faith guided her before relocating to Jackson a decade ago. Despite experiencing homelessness, she was working on starting a cleaning business and stabilizing her life.
Ratliff faces a murder charge and is held at the Hinds County Detention Center. According to State Defender André de Gruy, Ratliff is set to appear in Jackson Municipal Court by Monday morning for the reading of formal charges and setting of bond conditions. Specific evidence linking Ratliff to the crime scene remains undisclosed as investigations continue.
