Mayor Faces Criticism at 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s attendance at the 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Ground Zero has sparked controversy. Some local figures and a former police officer expressed that the mayor should have avoided the event. Criticism surrounds Mamdani due to his associations with controversial figures and his appointment of Ramzi Kassem as chief counsel, a lawyer formerly linked to representing a Guantánamo detainee associated with al Qaeda.

Former New York Republican Governor George Pataki and 9/11-era FDNY Commissioner Thomas von Essen were among the voices suggesting Mamdani’s absence from the ceremony. Walter Matuza, whose father died on September 11, echoed these sentiments, noting that Mamdani’s presence troubled him and others.

Walter Matuza participated in a petition initiated by victims’ families urging Mamdani to stay away. Matuza highlighted Mamdani’s connection to streamer Hasan Piker, who controversially stated America “deserved 9/11.” Mamdani’s appointment of Kassem also drew ire, particularly because Kassem had defended a key al Qaeda figure.

Opinions varied among those present. Mike, a former New Jersey officer, recalled assisting NYPD officers during the tragedy. He believes Mamdani should have skipped the event, citing troubling past rhetoric. Additionally, a mourner described Mamdani’s appearance as purely political, labeling him a “communist.”

Steven traveled to New York from Hobe Sound, Florida, to attend the ceremony. He condemned Mamdani’s presence as disrespectful, reflecting widespread disapproval from New Yorkers, over 700,000 of whom reportedly opposed Mamdani’s attendance through a petition.

Steven also criticized Kassem’s appointment and expressed concern over younger generations’ lack of accurate knowledge about 9/11. He plans to educate his children on its significance.

Conversely, attendee John supported Mamdani’s right to attend. John lost friends from Howard Lutnick’s Cantor-Fitzgerald firm, which suffered the greatest losses that day. John emphasized the importance of respecting those lost rather than boycotting attendance.

In response, Mamdani expressed pride in his city and country. He focused on honoring families of victims and acknowledging the efforts of first responders during the attack.

Footage showed Mamdani interacting briefly with former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani at the ceremony. All living former U.S. presidents reportedly attended, with President Donald Trump choosing to visit the Pentagon. The remembrance event aimed to honor those impacted by the tragedy.
