Christian McCaffrey’s Australian Adventure: Understanding Local Slang

For Christian McCaffrey, the trip to Australia with the San Francisco 49ers offered a unique learning opportunity. He discovered cultural differences in language firsthand.

During a postgame press conference, McCaffrey, 30, shared a humorous interaction he had while getting a haircut. “I was getting a haircut a few days ago and one of the barbers looks at me and says, ‘Looks cracker,'” McCaffrey recounted.

George Kittle and Deebo Samuel, teammates who joined him at the press conference, laughed as McCaffrey explained his confusion. In the United States, “cracker” is often considered a derogatory term for White people. However, McCaffrey learned the barber was giving him a compliment.

“I didn’t know what it meant, I guess it means it looks good. But that was funny,” McCaffrey remarked.

In Australia, “cracker” is colloquial slang for describing something as excellent or impressive. McCaffrey shared, “He said ‘cracker’ again, and I replied, ‘Dude, I hear that every Sunday.’ That was a good moment. I enjoy all the slang,” he said with a smile.

The 49ers were in high spirits after their 27-7 victory against the Los Angeles Rams. McCaffrey contributed with 10 carries for 68 yards and five receptions for 20 yards. The team’s rookie running back, Kaelon Black, partnered in the game and managed 14 carries for 65 yards, likely to help maintain McCaffrey’s health throughout the season.

As the 49ers prepare to return to the United States following their successful journey and amusing lesson in Australian terminology, they look forward to facing the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.
