Defense attorney Kevin Reddington addressed criticism from legal analyst and Fox News contributor Jonathan Turley regarding his comments on a lone juror’s decision during Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial.
Reddington expressed a willingness to debate Turley. He said in a conversation with Fox News correspondent Bryan Llenas, “I’d like to meet with him sometime and maybe debate a few things.” This response came after Turley criticized Reddington for his public remarks concerning the juror who blocked a unanimous verdict.
Llenas mentioned Turley’s previous criticism: “Professor Turley said your attack on the juror was, quote, ‘utterly reprehensible, a breathtaking abandonment of restraint and decency. He effectively put a target on the back of a juror who committed the unpardonable sin of not being convinced by his arguments.’”
Reddington denied Turley’s claims, stating, “Well, I guess Jonathan Turley was wrong, wasn’t he? Based on what we now know as far as the reason why this jury did not vote in accordance with the law. Maybe Jonathan Turley should check out the record before he makes his accusations. I kind of think his comments were reprehensible.”
Llenas noted that the public is not fully informed about the lone juror’s viewpoint. Reddington replied, “Probably a matter of time before he’s getting interviewed somewhere, and you can find out.”
Turley defended his position following the interview. He stated, “I was surprised to learn this morning that Kevin Reddington challenged me to a debate in an interview with Fox News reporter Bryan Llenas over my criticism of his attack on the holdout juror in the Clancy trial.”
Turley maintained that attorneys should not instigate public anger against jurors, emphasizing the ethical responsibility lawyers hold. Reddington argued that the juror’s decision contradicted the judge’s instructions and that additional facts back his criticism.
Clancy’s trial resulted in a mistrial after jurors could not reach a consensus on her culpability in the deaths of her children. Prosecutors intend to retry her on the murder charges.
