John Holecek has made a surprising comeback to coach Loyola after three years. His return, while significant, is accompanied by another noteworthy change: the addition of offensive coordinator Danny Schaechter. Schaechter brought with him a remarkable coaching credential, having previously worked with Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.

Loyola’s new offense under Schaechter, characterized by a more pass-oriented strategy, has yielded positive results as the team maintains an undefeated record. Holecek praised the approach, stating, “So far, it’s been great.” He compared the traditional Catholic League style to the current strategy, highlighting the diversity in personnel packages.

In a remarkable game during Williams’ sophomore year, Gonzaga claimed the conference championship against DeMatha with a thrilling 46-43 victory, highlighted by Williams’ 53-yard Hail Mary touchdown. Schaechter leverages such experiences to instill a ‘never give up’ mindset in his players.

Coaching Background and Philosophy

Originating from Northbrook, Schaechter’s coaching journey started at Glenbrook North and continued during college at Illinois State. A student assistant role shaped his career, leading him to various coaching positions, including at Leesburg High School under Head Coach Trivers. Following Williams’ graduation, Schaechter returned closer to home, coaching at Libertyville with success.

At Loyola, Schaechter finds a new audience eager for stories of triumph and skill development, including junior quarterback Matthew Lee, who appreciates the new offensive style.
