Democratic lawmakers are urging a federal investigation to scrutinize the potential misuse of personal information gathered from participants at events related to the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations. This inquiry focuses on whether such data could aid President Donald Trump and his allies in upcoming elections.

Representatives Jared Huffman from California and Joe Morelle from New York have directed their request to the Government Accountability Office (GAO). They want the GAO to look into Freedom 250, an organization with Trump’s backing that significantly contributed to organizing semiquincentennial celebrations.

Our preliminary findings suggest a possibility that President Trump and his allies might exploit information on American voters, acquired using taxpayer money and government resources, in attempts to influence the forthcoming midterm elections, the lawmakers wrote in their letter.

Data Collection Concerns

Huffman and Morelle highlight allegations regarding Freedom 250’s event registrations, which reportedly required attendees to submit personal details such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, and ZIP codes. The suspicion is that these registrations were processed via Campaign Nucleus, a digital platform tied to former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale.

The lawmakers claim that due to these processes, companies gained additional access to attendees’ information. These activities allegedly connected registrants to a Trump-branded fundraising site, raising concerns about political data sharing.

Freedom 250’s privacy policy indicates that while they do gather personal and geographic data, their policy limits sharing this information to essential operational functions.

Understanding Freedom 250

Freedom 250, launched in December 2025 under Trump, describes itself as a non-partisan entity orchestrating events for America’s 250th anniversary. Keith Krach was appointed as CEO. Democrats have criticized Freedom 250 for overshadowing America250, the congressionally created commission for the celebrations, while the organization rebuffs such claims as politically charged.

America250 and Freedom 250 both played roles in marking the 250th anniversary but originate from different backgrounds. America250, legislated by Congress, works through the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission. Its objective is to prepare and promote national anniversary programs. Freedom 250 began as an independent effort, taking the lead in celebrations and initiatives.
