This step indicates growing interest in expanding the playoff field to 24 teams, possibly starting in 2027, as reported by Heather Dinich from ESPN.

It’s important to note that this move doesn’t guarantee the playoff expansion beyond the existing 12-team format. The statement also doesn’t confirm if the expansion, if enacted, will include exactly 24 teams. The current discussions suggest that significant conferences like the Big Ten and SEC see the value in engaging with ESPN to evaluate the potential benefits.

A statement from the CFP backed up this intention, saying, “The CFP has decided to move forward in its evaluation of potential Playoff expansion to 24 teams by beginning a media rights discussion with ESPN.” The statement clarified that this step does not equate to a decision or commitment to expand but is rather an opportunity to gather additional information. Negotiations could commence as early as Wednesday.

With the possibility of more playoff games on the horizon, changes like the elimination of conference championship games might occur. Dinich noted that these changes rely on whether the expansion can offset media value of at least $200 million, along with additional revenue from tickets, sponsorships, and other game-day sources.

This shift would mark a significant change for fans, given the long-standing tradition of conference championship games. However, replacing them might address issues due to their limited impact on the national title race. The games often serve more as exhibitions rather than affecting playoff selection.
