In a recent court session, Phil Barber addressed claims about the difficulty in finding affordable lodging near the Charleston County Courthouse. Barber clarified that Mount Pleasant, offering nine budget hotels, is a mere 15-minute drive from the courthouse. He also highlighted that weekend pricing at these hotels would not interfere with weekday court activities.
A South Carolina judge, Debra McCaslin, authorized relocating Alex Murdaugh’s double-murder retrial to Sumter County on Tuesday. Defense attorneys argued over Colleton County’s jury pool, tainted due to media coverage of the first trial. The judge’s ruling specified that Sumter County has the necessary security, courtroom amenities, and technology for the retrial.
The order recognized factors such as Colleton County’s financial implications, witness convenience, and the overall security of Murdaugh and all involved in the proceedings.
Murdaugh’s legal team had suggested moving the trial to either Charleston or Richland County before the judge’s decision.
The new trial follows a decision by the South Carolina Supreme Court granting Murdaugh a retrial. The court found that jury tampering by former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill compromised his 2023 trial results. Murdaugh faced charges for the June 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and their son, Paul, at the family’s estate. The earlier conviction resulted in two life sentences but was overturned.
Murdaugh had admitted during the 2023 trial to lying about his whereabouts before the shooting. However, he maintains his innocence regarding the murders.
