Suspect Charged in Incident Involving Ohio Governor Candidate

Authorities have identified Patrick Havas, 38, as the suspect involved in an incident during a campaign stop for Democratic candidate Amy Acton at the Canfield Fair. Havas reportedly charged through the crowd towards Acton, disrupting audience members at the event. The Ohio State Highway Patrol disclosed that Havas was carrying a Taser and two pistols at the time.

Havas, currently detained at Mahoning County Jail, faces charges of disorderly conduct and assault. Acton, opposed by Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, is campaigning in one of the nation’s most watched gubernatorial races.

Details of the Incident

The altercation transpired in the Mahoning County Democratic Party tent during Ohio’s annual fair. According to the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, Havas pushed through individuals while filming on his cellphone. Recent voter records indicate that Havas is not aligned with any political party, despite participating in a GOP primary in 2016.

Havas, a licensed nurse, has a past charge of disorderly conduct related to petty theft in 2008, although the theft charge was dismissed. He was also fined for traffic infractions in 2008 and 2011.

Law Enforcement Response

Security personnel, including Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers, managed to restrain Havas. He allegedly collided with two elderly individuals on mobility scooters, causing them to fall. Although Havas carried weapons, none were drawn during the incident.

Further investigation is ongoing, with potential charges pending consultation with the County Prosecutor. The state patrol is assessing any threat posed by Havas.

Addie Bullock, Acton’s campaign communication director, expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s prompt action and concern for the injured. Acton’s opponent, Ramaswamy, described the incident as unwarranted and emphasized the need for safe political engagements.

Ohio Governor DeWine and Senator Jon Husted both condemned the attack, praising law enforcement’s rapid response and affirming that such behavior must be rejected in political contexts. The Mahoning County Republican Party also expressed disappointment, reiterating opposition to political violence.

A correction was issued indicating Havas is not a registered Republican, despite participating in a Republican primary in 2016.
