King Charles III Confirms Prince Harry and Meghan’s Non-Working Royal Status

King Charles III has affirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, remain non-working members of the royal family. Following their return to the United Kingdom, a letter from the king sent to high-ranking government officials reiterated this status. The couple has refrained from using their royal titles since stepping back from their official duties in 2020.

The communication, sent by the Lord Chamberlain, highlights that any charity work from Harry and Meghan will continue privately. Matters regarding operational security decisions are designated to relevant police agencies.

The letter was addressed to senior government and military officials and lord lieutenants, the king’s representatives across the country. It states, “To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that (this) information be shared.”

The public release of the letter suggests concerns among palace observers about Harry and Meghan’s potential to form a parallel royal court competing with active royal family members. The issue of security is notable due to Harry’s longstanding battle with the government over publicly funded police protection, which was withdrawn upon their departure from royal duties.

Decisions regarding restoring the couple’s round-the-clock police protection reside with the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC), a government panel. The Lord Chamberlain advised, “Any specific questions from official and State organizations about the courtesies which should be extended to the Duke and Duchess, and particularly where recourse to public funds may be required, should be directed to Buckingham Palace.”
