AfD Leads in Saxony-Anhalt’s Regional Election

Supporters of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) celebrated as initial results of the Saxony-Anhalt state election revealed a lead for their party. The gathering in Magdeburg, Germany, featured a prominent sign with top candidate Ulrich Siegmund, marking a significant moment for the party.

According to exit polls by ARD and ZDF, the AfD secured a record 44.1% to 44.5% of the votes. This places them well ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which managed only 18.5%. In comparison, the AfD had 20.8% in the 2021 election. This shift indicates the AfD’s voter base has grown significantly, while the CDU’s support has decreased.

If these results hold, it will be the first time in postwar Germany that a far-right party controls a state government. Nationally, the AfD’s anti-establishment stance appeals beyond eastern Germany. Federal polls also place them as a leading party.

AfD federal leader Alice Weidel emphasized the party’s surge, stating that the conservative bloc will struggle in future elections. She mentioned the AfD’s growth not only in Saxony-Anhalt but across all of East Germany as a potential indicator of federal-level success.

Ulrich Siegmund, the face of the AfD’s campaign in Saxony-Anhalt, has driven much of this momentum. At 35, Siegmund presents a polished image with strong, radical viewpoints. His campaigns focus on immigration, advocating for mass deportations, and proposing changes in migration and education policies.

The AfD also seeks regional public broadcaster changes and promotes ties with Russia and the MAGA movement in the United States. Following the election results, Siegmund declared they had “written history,” extending gratitude to Chancellor Merz for an unexpected assistance during the campaign.
