In January 2022, Hannah Pettey faced unbearable pain that lasted six months, leaving her bedridden. With two young children, she struggled to care for them due to her illness.
Her husband, Brian Mann, a chiropractor, couldn’t diagnose her condition. On January 18, Hannah’s mother, Nicole Pettey, sensed something was wrong during a phone call. Hannah could only gasp and ask for a ride to the hospital at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
Doctors at UAB found Hannah in critical condition. She experienced a severe seizure and was found to be starving. Alarmingly, her body was filled with lead.
“Her colon was packed with lead,” Nicole recalled. Doctors stated it couldn’t be accidental and suggested attempted murder.
Hannah’s case was reported to the Department of Human Resources, and visitation was severely restricted as both Nicole and Brian were potential suspects.
Hannah eventually regained consciousness, but her condition still baffled doctors. She was placed in a coma to treat fluid accumulation in her brain.
Investigations pointed to Brian. The police searched their home but found no evidence of lead. Brian claimed Nicole misled the investigation, but no capsules or tampered supplements were uncovered.
During her recovery, Hannah revealed that Brian insisted she take capsules nightly. Hannah cooperated with investigators and filed for divorce.
The case took a turn when investigators learned Brian had taken out life insurance policies on Hannah. They later discovered a contractor’s testimony that Brian had access to lead from his office renovations.
The trial commenced in June 2025. The prosecution argued that Brian used lead to poison Hannah, driven by monetary motives. Hannah’s testimony of receiving capsules bolstered the case against Brian.
Defense attorney Chad Morgan claimed a lack of physical evidence connecting Brian to the lead. However, the jury found Brian guilty of attempted murder, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment in August 2025.
Hannah’s story ended with hope for a better future. She finished her college education, now works as a teacher, and resides happily with her children.
