Outrage in Ceuta Over Dolphin Incident Involving Migrants

Migrants in the North African Spanish enclave of Ceuta have sparked outrage following an incident involving a young dolphin. Video footage shows a group of men and boys lifting a baby bottlenose dolphin above their heads while spectators cheered. The dolphin had swum too close to the shore, where the group reportedly pulled it from the water at El Trampolin beach.

The actions angered local residents who tried to intervene. One man allegedly struck the dolphin with a stick, leading to serious injuries. Despite the cheers from some onlookers, others in the crowd were clearly concerned about the treatment of the marine mammal. Eventually, someone returned the dolphin to the water. The incident has led to widespread condemnation among the Ceuta community.

“On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, a disoriented dolphin calf swimming near the shore at Trampolin Beach, in Ceuta, was brutally pulled from the water,” wrote Nadia Garcia Gomez in a social media post. She announced a petition calling for the arrest of those involved and described the treatment as “extreme and unjustifiable cruelty.”

Dolphins are protected under Spanish and European laws. Gomez emphasized the need for accountability, urging that such actions should not go unpunished.

The incident comes amid a larger crisis in Ceuta, where more than 70,000 migrants from Morocco attempted to cross the enclave’s border defenses in July 2026. While many returned home, thousands remain, causing tension within the community.

Calls for the expulsion and prosecution of those responsible for the dolphin incident have intensified, alongside demands for stronger government action from Madrid. Recently, local residents dismantled migrant tents and shelters at the beach in a show of frustration.
