Smithsonian Under Scrutiny: Allegations of Bias and Federal Funding Threats

Fox News host Laura Ingraham criticizes the Smithsonian Institution for promoting an ‘activist agenda’ through ‘restorative history,’ claiming it paints a negative picture of America. She draws attention to the National Museum of American History director Anthea Hartig’s remarks on their educational materials and controversial exhibits, pointing to an alleged ‘fetish attire’ display and the absence of pro-life narratives. Ingraham questions the allocation of taxpayer funds for such initiatives.

The Trump administration made public a letter, suggesting the Smithsonian violated federal nondiscrimination laws. The letter claims the institution’s culture might have led to significant legal breaches, including establishing a hostile environment and discriminating based on race, ethnicity, and other protected characteristics. However, specific proof of such activities wasn’t provided. A Fox News Digital investigation indicates that key figures at the Smithsonian support diversity, equity, and inclusion, which the Trump administration views as racially discriminatory.

Conservative leaders, including former President Donald Trump, accuse the Smithsonian of being influenced by progressive ideologies. Trump issued an executive order in 2025 mandating officials to eliminate ‘improper ideology’ from the museum. The Department of Interior (DOI) spokesperson said this order aims to restore trust in the Smithsonian Institution.

The Smithsonian announced ongoing reviews of the White House’s letter, highlighting concerns about ‘divisive or partisan narratives’ in its museums. Meanwhile, liberals counter that conservative criticisms are efforts to reshape historical narratives politically. If unresolved, these issues might lead to withdrawal of support, adding pressure to the institution’s $1 billion federal funding.

Federal agencies hesitate to back the Smithsonian, considering asset loans and discretionary grants due to current leadership. Although the administration didn’t specify desired changes, it noted that a response from the institution must address leadership strategies and ideology. This is noteworthy since the Smithsonian operates independently but is governed by a board with presidentially appointed members. By October, four vacancies on the board of regents could allow the administration to enhance its influence.

DOI requested a meeting with Smithsonian representatives to discuss the alleged bias and civil rights issues. During a congressional hearing on July 21, 2026, Anthea Hartig stated that the museum remains impartial, preserving evidence of American life for public reflection.

The Smithsonian refused to comment on the letter when approached by Fox News Digital. Reports show its leadership has deep ties to liberal advocacy and Democratic politics. The museum’s exhibits, viewed by the Trump administration as demonizing America, are matched by similar DEI and gender equity themes even at the Smithsonian-run National Zoo.
