Dylan Sprouse Reflects on Child Acting as ‘Child Labor’

Former Disney Channel actor Dylan Sprouse shared his thoughts on his early career as a child actor. During an episode of his podcast “Wildmen,” Dylan discussed the challenges faced by young actors with his co-host Brendan Columbus and guest Mark Indelicato.

Dylan, now 34, labeled child acting as “child labor,” drawing comparisons to historical child work like coal mining. He remarked, “When you work at that age, some kids used to work in coal mines. We just sang and danced. It’s still child labor!” He acknowledged ongoing “mental hurdles” in his acting career, commenting on the industry’s lasting impact.

He suggested parallels between child acting and working a full-time office job. “You go in, you clock in, you clock out,” Dylan explained. He characterized the industry as fostering a “workaholic attitude” in child actors.

Dylan and his twin brother Cole began in feature films at six, sharing roles from infancy on “Grace Under Fire” to their breakthrough in “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.” Later, Dylan paused acting to study video game design at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, returning to the screen with more selective projects.

Reflecting on the transition from projects as a child, Dylan noted, “It feels like my self-esteem was tied integrally to my ability to work and be on set.” This sentiment highlights the emotional complexity child actors might face after finishing roles.

Cole Sprouse has previously discussed their mother’s role in their acting careers. He described the financial motivations and how it influenced their upbringing. He mentioned their father’s desire for them to lead a more ordinary life, contrasting with their mother’s ambitions for their fame.
