Oregon Ducks Likely Contenders for National Title According to Coaches

College football often sees powerhouse programs dominate, while teams without a significant history of success struggle to reach the top. Despite the Indiana Hoosiers’ unexpected victory last year, first-time national champions remain a rarity. However, this season the stage appears set for another first-time champion.

An Athletic survey of 18 coaches indicates strong belief in Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks to clinch the national title. Six of these coaches favored Oregon, the highest number of votes any team received, with no other team capturing more than three votes. One coach abstained from voting, confident that his own team would secure the championship, as reported by The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.

“This is the most open race we’ve had in college football in a long time. I’ll say Oregon. Dan Lanning has steadily improved, and this year he’s set to break through,” an ACC offensive analyst told Feldman.

A significant driver of these expectations is quarterback Dante Moore, who garnered nine out of 18 votes for the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. No other player surpassed four votes. A Big 12 team general manager remarked, “I’ll say Moore because he’s set to play many marquee games.”

If Moore meets these high expectations and remains a serious Heisman contender, Oregon positions itself well to compete for its first title. Historically, the team often enters the national title conversation but fails to capitalize. Last season, an interception thrown by Moore on the first play allowed Indiana to dominate, leading to a 56-22 playoff defeat for Oregon.

This year, insiders predict the Ducks’ season will have a different outcome, with expectations set on a stronger finish.
