Ricky Skaggs Reflects on Faith and Music with Dolly Parton

Ricky Skaggs shared memories of his collaboration with Dolly Parton during a conversation with Fox News Digital. The 72-year-old musician recalled the time spent recording the 1989 album “White Limozeen,” which marked Parton’s return to prominence in the country music scene. Skaggs fondly remembered a significant moment at Parton’s Nashville home.

Before working on “White Limozeen,” Parton invited Skaggs to her home where they experienced a private, spiritual moment. According to Skaggs, Parton led him to a small church rebuilt in her backyard. This church, originally from her childhood in East Tennessee, had been reconstructed from numbered pieces in her backyard.

“She wanted me to go in,” Skaggs recounted. Inside, they found a modest piano and an altar reminiscent of mountain Baptist churches. The two began praying, seeking God’s blessing on their recording project. Skaggs noted the lasting impact of that day on his life.

The collaboration between Skaggs and Parton began after he appeared on her Los Angeles-based television show “Dolly.” After the appearance, Skaggs expressed his admiration for Parton and his desire for her to return to her country roots. He was taken aback when Parton invited him to produce her next album.

“White Limozeen” shifted Parton back towards traditional country sounds. It achieved success, reaching No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and produced two No. 1 singles. The record also earned Gold certification from the RIAA.

Though “White Limozeen” was their only major recording together, Skaggs emphasized a lasting bond with Parton rooted in their common Appalachian origins and Christian beliefs. He admired Parton’s unwavering faith and her compassion toward those in need, regardless of criticisms regarding her glamorous image.

Throughout her life, Parton was well-known for her humanitarian efforts, including the Imagination Library, disaster relief fund efforts, and substantial contributions toward medical research. Her generosity left a profound impression on Skaggs, inspiring him and his band to pray before every show.
