In January 2026, the Trump administration declared an indefinite freeze on visa processing for nationals from 75 countries. This was part of a series of policies introduced since Trump’s re-election. The freeze targeted individuals deemed likely to become a “public charge,” a designation for those dependent on public benefits for their essentials.
In August, a federal court overturned the visa freeze. Furthermore, in the same month, the administration temporarily halted processing immigrant visa appointments globally. This suspension aimed to facilitate consular officer training. The delay is expected to end by early to mid-September.
