According to insights from Law Murray of The Athletic, there was internal discord between James and fellow Lakers star Austin Reaves last season. Murray detailed how James struggled with deferring to Reaves, despite recognizing Luka Doncic as the leading figure in the team.

Bron was very pleased with being able to still be the lead option in a postseason setting, particularly a winning one against the Rockets.

Transitioning to the 76ers presents a different narrative for James. Murray explains that Tyrese Maxey, who routinely shares playmaking duties, will align with James in Philadelphia. Maxey, accustomed to collaborating with ball-dominant teammates such as Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and James Harden, will handle the ball without diminishing James’ playmaking potential. This dynamic is expected to enhance overall offensive efficacy, benefiting players like Jaylen Brown.

Austin Reaves has ascended with the Lakers, marking his best season yet. He achieved a career-high average of 23.2 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.7 rebounds in 34.5 minutes per game, shooting 49% overall and 36% from beyond the arc. While Reaves flourished alongside Luka Doncic, shouldering more of the team’s future, James dominated the offense in the playoffs, posting 23.2 points per game leading the Lakers past the Rockets.

The Lakers’ future seems increasingly centered on Doncic and Reaves. This shift was further cemented by a four-year, $180 million contract extension for Reaves prior to free agency, coinciding with James’ departure decision.
