The Nashville airport may soon carry the name of the beloved country music icon Dolly Parton. Tennessee’s Governor Bill Lee announced this proposal on Friday following the recent passing of Parton, a Tennessee native, at the age of 80 due to cancer.
Gov. Bill Lee said it would be a fitting tribute for Nashville International Airport to bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter.
The governor’s statement suggests that the renaming honors Parton’s significant contributions to music and her beloved status among Tennesseans. He also mentioned having discussed the matter with representatives of Parton.
The change could mean revisiting existing naming policies established by the Metro Nashville Airport Authority. Currently, these guidelines mandate that airport properties should only carry the names of individuals deceased for a minimum of two years.
The governor’s office indicated that the proposal, along with existing naming policies, will be reviewed by the airport authority during their scheduled meeting on September 17.
