Former NBA player Royce White has taken an ambitious step by announcing his intention to enter the next WNBA Draft as a male. This move follows closely on the heels of Enes Kanter Freedom’s removal from a game, an incident that sparked widespread attention.

White made his campaign known at the Indiana Fever’s game against the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Sporting a long blonde wig, White mingled with fans who welcomed him, posing for photos and exchanging greetings. His appearance at the game was a continuation of his public declaration, aligning with Freedom’s recent announcement.

When questioned on his presence, White proclaimed, “All hail Queen Roysha, the queen has arrived, it’s great to be here… I’m here because Black trans lesbians matter, and we’ve always mattered, we’ve always existed… I’m here to participate and scout some of the competition maybe as well.” He emphasized his support for the WNBA and the Indiana Fever while maintaining a nonchalant attitude toward public reception.

The issue of gender identity in sports gained traction when Freedom’s ejection evolved into a broader discussion. White’s attendance at the game posed the potential for further dialogue. Asked if similar events might unfold with him present, White simply remarked on his intent to spectate and support the league.

White had been active on social media prior to this, unveiling the look he’s embraced for the campaign. Officially, he declared for the draft via a letter to the WNBA, authored by his attorney and former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz. The letter reflects White’s identification as a transgender woman, asserting eligibility through the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

“Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA,” the CBA states, though it lacks explicit criteria regarding biological sex or gender identity.

This declaration seeks to challenge the league to clarify its stance on whether biological males can participate. White voices his intent clearly: “I’m transgender. I’m a woman. I identify as sometimes identifying as a woman for purpose of basketball, professional basketball, so I’ll be declaring for the WNBA draft in 2027 as well.” He has also mentioned possible legal action if barred from competing.

Reports indicate that both White and Freedom face ineligibility for the draft, with some viewing these moves as publicity maneuvers. Nonetheless, White’s legal representation indicates that no formal decision has been communicated by the WNBA.
