Chance Encounter Transforms Life of Former College Athlete

Earlier this year, Jasper Steinmetz was walking in Austin, Texas, when a chance meeting along a path changed a life. He noticed a man carrying an Indiana University athletic backpack and decided to start a conversation.

Steinmetz, a recent graduate of Indiana University, found a connection with the man, Sampson James. James had been homeless for eight months. He shared his story with Steinmetz, who learned about his background.

James had been a promising athlete, a four-star football recruit from Avon High School in Indiana. In 2019, he played as a running back for Indiana University. He later transferred to Purdue in 2021 and returned briefly to Indiana University as a walk-on in 2023. Unfortunately, injuries and personal challenges, including a knee injury and bipolar disorder, led him to drop out of university without completing his degree.

James found himself with few possessions, keeping only his red school backpack. Yet this chance meeting with Steinmetz, another Hoosier, proved to be pivotal.

“He told me he went to IU as well. So I was like, wow, that’s amazing, go Hoosiers,” James shared. “He was able to grasp and understand me and come to a point of understanding.”

Motivated by their shared connection, Steinmetz decided to help. In June, he started an online fundraiser for James. The campaign successfully raised $17,000.

With the funds, Steinmetz secured a home for James. This included prepaying rent and ensuring he had everything necessary for a fresh start.

Their journey together transformed both lives. James expressed his gratitude for the donations and support, committed to not letting down those who believed in his second chance.

For both Steinmetz and James, this chance meeting symbolizes the power of understanding and shared backgrounds in bridging gaps and creating new opportunities.
