House Committee Investigates Sanctuary Jurisdiction Practices

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, representing Ohio, has announced that subpoenas could be issued if county prosecutors accused of leniency towards illegal immigrants involved in crimes do not cooperate with investigations. Jordan’s committee targets district attorneys in ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’ who allegedly consider immigration status when handling criminal cases that do not pertain to the suspects’ legal residency.

During an interview with Fox News, Jordan expressed a willingness to use subpoenas to obtain necessary documents if initial requests are unsuccessful. ‘We ask for things, we ask again, we explain why, and we work with their offices,’ Jordan stated. ‘Subpoenas will be used if needed, but our goal is to uncover the facts.’

The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into Steve Descano, the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Fairfax County, Virginia, who faced scrutiny after a local stabbing incident involving an illegal immigrant. The suspect in the case had been arrested over 30 times before the incident. Fairfax County’s sanctuary status and Descano’s guidance on plea bargaining, which includes considering immigration consequences, have fueled debate.

Jordan criticized policies like those in Fairfax County that do not mandate local law enforcement to comply with federal immigration authorities, citing their dangers, especially given the county’s proximity to Washington, D.C. He also pointed to other jurisdictions, such as New York and Philadelphia, where similar practices by district attorneys are in question.

Steve Descano’s district attorney campaign received significant financial support from the Justice and Public Safety PAC, linked to billionaire George Soros. Jordan highlights the need to address these sanctuary policies as they pose risks to national security.
