DHS Fires Three More FEMA Workers After Inspector General Report

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) fired three additional FEMA workers this Thursday following an inspector general report. The report revealed that FEMA crews had skipped servicing homes displaying pro-Trump signs after Hurricane Milton. These recent dismissals add to previous firings after last week’s release of the report.

An investigation by FEMA’s Office of Professional Responsibility concluded that the employees failed to meet FEMA’s standards of conduct. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin emphasized the importance of delivering disaster relief impartially. Mullin stated, “Our job is to protect the American people, regardless of their political beliefs. This is especially important when it comes to disaster relief, where every second counts and lives are on the line.” He added that accountability measures had been enforced to prevent similar incidents.

FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton expressed gratitude for the steps taken, noting, “Thanks to President Trump, FEMA has been empowered to hold accountable those responsible and has changed how it conducts survivor outreach to ensure Americans are treated fairly and assistance is driven by need.” Hamilton assured that no political bias should interfere with public service.

The firings included FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington, who instructed personnel not to assist homes with Trump signage in Lake Placid, Florida, in 2024. Washington defended her actions to the Washington Post, explaining her concerns for worker safety amid heightened political tension.

Washington described the challenges faced during the political season, mentioning aggressive encounters with residents. “I had never seen people so passionate during that political season,” Washington stated, adding the workers encountered hostility and threats.

“People calling people on the phone saying FEMA was here. They would beat us to the fence and yell: ‘Don’t come here, you are part of Biden; we know what Biden is doing. You are taking our money and giving it to immigrants.’ ‘Drain the swamp’ was a common term,” Washington explained.
