Montana Tragedy: Family Dinner Turns Deadly

On a tragic day in Montana, a shooting and subsequent fire resulted in multiple deaths at a family home. Authorities identified Alan Smith, 44, as the shooter who killed eight relatives, including four children. This incident unfolded weeks after Smith’s parents had asked him to move out.

Brad Ireland revealed that Smith’s former wife and two children were among those killed. The victims spanned four generations, from a wheelchair-bound great-grandmother to a young girl, aged 7.

Police and fire crews responded to the scene, battling the blaze that destroyed the home. The fire impacted the investigation due to concerns over the house’s structural integrity.

The Billings Police Department extends condolences to those affected by this tragedy, stated Sgt. Jeff Stovall.

The late-night fire fighting efforts were hindered by the absence of fire hydrants in the neighborhood, delaying effective action.

The deceased included Brad Ireland’s ex-wife, Megan Ghekiere, their children Owen, 13, and Chloe, 7, as well as stepchildren Landon, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12. Charlotte’s quick action in calling 911 has been recognized as heroic.

Megan Ghekiere’s second husband, Adam Ghekiere, was not present during the shooting. The Smith family had relocated from Seattle, Washington, with Alan Smith living with his parents in Montana for years before being asked to leave.

Alan Smith, who returned unexpectedly, targeted family members during dinner before setting the house on fire. His actions were followed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Community members have responded with support, launching GoFundMe campaigns for the affected family members. One campaign raised nearly $100,000, and another over $60,000.

Alan Smith, described as a reclusive individual, had attended Eastern Washington University but struggled to find stable employment. Neither his past nor criminal records indicated prior violent behavior.

Adam Ghekiere shared emotional moments and details concerning his family’s tragic loss. He learned of the incident while at work and raced to the scene, finding the home aflaze.

This event marks the 22nd mass killing in the U.S. this year, with domestic disputes accounting for a significant portion. This incident follows a similar tragic event in Louisiana earlier this year.
