Challenges for Tua Tagovailoa in Atlanta Falcons’ Quarterback Race

4 weeks ago 0

Tua Tagovailoa’s journey with the Atlanta Falcons faces hurdles as the NFL season approaches. The Falcons, after acquiring him post his release from the Miami Dolphins, hoped he would fit smoothly into coach Kevin Stefanski’s system. This would allow Michael Penix Jr., recovering from an ACL injury, additional time to heal.

According to Ian Rapoport from ESPN/NFL Network, Penix now seems favored for the Falcons’ starting role. Tagovailoa’s inconsistent performances in training and the first preseason game against the Denver Broncos raised concerns. In that game, Tagovailoa completed 3-of-5 passes for 22 yards before Stefanski tested other quarterbacks like Jack Strand and Cooper Rush.

It really seemed that the goal of the entire organization was to have Tua be the starting quarterback right away to start the season, Rapoport noted, emphasizing the initial hope to let Penix recover fully.

During a joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts, held in Westfield, Ind., Tagovailoa’s performance didn’t meet expectations. The Falcons hoped for a quarterback competition but now rely on Penix, who is resuming full activity, preparing for a potential start against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1.

Coach Stefanski spoke about the continuous competition within the team, stating, Everything we do around this building is competing. He highlighted the need for players to push each other, which is crucial in training and team dynamics.

Tagovailoa still holds a chance to improve his position. An upcoming preseason game against his former team, the Dolphins, offers an opportunity to regain confidence and potentially secure the starting role.

Coach Stefanski and his staff face a critical decision before the Sept. 13 game against the Steelers, determining who will lead the Falcons’ offense into the new season.
