Karen Solomon, known for advocating police mental health, was found dead six days after disappearing from her Massachusetts home. She had been suspected in the death of her husband, Kurt Solomon, a Worcester police officer. Authorities believe this incident was a murder-suicide.
Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier stated that human remains, likely Karen Solomon’s, were found near Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital. A handgun was found nearby, not linked to the Worcester police. Confirmation of her identity was pending.
On August 18, Kurt Solomon, a 31-year police veteran, was found dead at their home at around 5:30 a.m. He suffered fatal injuries from a sharp object, and Karen was last seen shortly after.
Authorities had issued an arrest warrant for Karen Solomon on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. A search involved drones, boats, and tracking dogs, focusing on areas near their home and a nearby reservoir.
Karen Solomon, who co-founded First H.E.L.P., wrote books on the struggles of first responders. She noted the limited support offered by police departments for families affected by officer suicides during a 2020 “Dr. Phil” interview.
The Solomon family expressed gratitude to law enforcement for providing them with some answers during this difficult time. They described their experience over the past week as heart-wrenching.
A wake for Kurt Solomon was planned for Tuesday, followed by his funeral on Wednesday. Thomas Duffy, local police union president, remembered Kurt as a valued community member.
