Alaska’s Senate Race Faces Same-Name Controversy

Former Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan has endorsed incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan in Alaska’s unusual Senate race involving candidates with the same name. This endorsement adds another dimension to the contest where Sen. Dan S. Sullivan and his allies have accused teacher Dan J. Sullivan of entering the race to confuse and siphon votes. Dan J. Sullivan, however, claims to be a genuine moderate Republican challenger.

The former mayor expressed his support on social media, stating, “As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. He’s been great for Alaska.” There have been legal attempts by Republicans to remove Dan J. Sullivan from the ballot, pointing to his work with a Democratic consultant as evidence of a possible plot to mislead voters. Dan J. Sullivan has dismissed these claims, expressing dissatisfaction with Sen. Dan S. Sullivan’s representation.

The primary has seen Sen. Dan S. Sullivan and Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola advance. However, it remains uncertain if Dan J. Sullivan will join them as ballots are still being counted. A recent ruling from the Alaska Supreme Court allowed Dan J. Sullivan to stay on the ballot following a challenge. The investigation into whether he is part of a plot to confuse voters continues. The Sullivan campaign has not commented on the situation.
