Scott Bessent previewed strong U.S. economic actions against Iran, describing it as a major financial offensive. In an article for the Financial Times, Bessent urged countries not to provide financial support to Iran. He warned that those who assist Iran could face isolation themselves.
“To become a sanctuary for terror is to become, in the eyes of the United States, a global pariah,” Bessent stated. While he did not disclose specific economic measures, he announced plans to hold a press conference to provide more information.
Bessent, serving as the Treasury Secretary, mentioned during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David that all governmental agencies are prepared to take actions that many previously thought were unlikely. Last week, President Trump threatened extensive economic warfare and isolation against Iran, echoing Bessent’s reference to an ‘economic D-Day.’
Currently, Iran faces significant U.S. sanctions, but new measures may extend to countries trading with Iran. Such actions could impact China, a crucial trading partner for both Iran and the U.S. China’s President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the U.S. next month, adding complexity to the situation.
These developments highlight the U.S. commitment to applying pressure on Iran, potentially affecting international trade dynamics.
