U.S. Prepares Economic Offensive Against Iran

4 weeks ago 0

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has previewed extensive economic measures against Iran, which he describes as ‘an economic D-Day’ and ‘the greatest financial offensive against an adversary.’ Through an op-ed in the Financial Times, Bessent urged countries to reconsider their financial support for Iran, warning that siding with Iran could lead to shared isolation. ‘To become a sanctuary for terror,’ he stated, ‘is to become a global pariah in the eyes of the United States.’

Bessent did not specify the economic strategies planned by the U.S. but announced a press conference scheduled for today to provide further information. His comments followed a Cabinet meeting at Camp David on July 31, during which President Trump highlighted the activation of various agencies and authorities, underlines assumptions about actions previously thought unlikely. Last week, Trump emphasized ‘Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale’ labeling these actions as ‘economic D-Day.’

Iran currently faces extensive U.S. sanctions. However, this new economic plan could impact not only Iran but also countries conducting business with Iran. China, as a major trading partner for both Iran and the U.S., might find itself in a complex position, ahead of President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S. next month.
