U.S. Wheelchair Rugby Team Triumphs with Global Title

The U.S. wheelchair rugby team achieved a major victory, claiming its first global title in 16 years by defeating Australia in the World Championship final held in São Paulo, Brazil, on Sunday.

The American team, spearheaded by four-time Paralympian Chuck Aoki, secured a 57-51 win in the final. This match served as a rematch of the 2022 World Championship final. In the earlier pool play of the tournament, Australia triumphed over the U.S. with a score of 54-44 on Thursday.

The U.S. team advanced to the finals following a narrow 50-49 victory against Japan in the semifinals on Saturday. This semifinal was a rematch of the 2024 Paralympic final in which Japan emerged victorious.

Looking ahead, the U.S. team will enter the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics as the reigning world champion. They aim to secure Paralympic gold for the first time since their victory at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. Over the last four Paralympic Games, the U.S. team consistently earned silver or bronze medals.

Historically, the only instance where the host nation clinched the Paralympic tournament victory was when the U.S. accomplished this feat during wheelchair rugby’s debut as a demonstration sport at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Australia has a strong track record, winning two of the last four Paralympic titles and two of the last four world titles in wheelchair rugby.
