1 month ago 0

The first practice session offered teams an opportunity to test wet tires. In contrast, the second session began with a dry track, setting the stage just hours before qualifying. Drivers experienced various moments earlier, but Graham Rahal’s crash marked the first significant incident of the weekend. His No. 15 Honda crashed in a braking zone, resulting in a red flag, leaving him stranded early in the session.

Rahal’s incident led to a loss of crucial track time before qualifying. Lap times improved considerably during the second practice, thanks to the dry conditions and increasing familiarity with the tricky seven-turn street circuit.

Turn 6, particularly its braking zone, proved challenging. Rahal’s teammate, Louis Foster, encountered issues here as well. He lost control after hitting a bump, striking the inside wall and damaging his front wing. Unlike Rahal, Foster managed to return his car to the pits. The bump at Turn 6 is a significant concern for drivers heading into qualifying and the race.

Alex Palou led the final practice session before qualifying, setting the pace for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. Team Penske strategically sent Scott McLaughlin late into the session, where he recorded the fastest lap at 56.895 on primary tires.

The next part of practice saw drivers using faster, alternate tires, hinting at their qualifying capabilities. Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood maintained strong form, finishing P2 on primary tires. Alex Palou recorded a 56.615 on new red alternate tires, followed closely by Kirkwood, who clocked a 56.691 on primary tires. Kirkwood, known for his street circuit skills, might have untapped potential that could influence the qualifying results.
