Minnesota Fraud Scandal Sparks Criticism in Gubernatorial Race

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Klobuchar faces criticism for her handling of a major fraud scandal in Minnesota. Her Republican opponent and social media critics have noted her lack of public mention on the issue in press releases, despite addressing various other fraud topics between 2022 and 2025.

A review of Klobuchar’s 1,000 official press releases showed no direct response or solutions for the extensive social services fraud scandal known as Feeding Our Future. This scandal involves $250 million and has potentially expanded to affect over $9 billion in state funds since it was exposed in January 2022.

Lise Demuth, Minnesota’s Republican House Speaker, pointed out Klobuchar’s silence during this time. She criticized the senator’s absence in addressing the fraud and not utilizing her 20 years in office to hold hearings on the matter. Instead, Demuth emphasized her own proactive approach when she became House Speaker in 2025 by establishing the Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee.

Despite her standing as the favored candidate to replace Governor Tim Walz, who is stepping down amid the scandal, Klobuchar’s record on fraud remains a point of contention. Critics argue that her ties to Walz and her previous praise for him as an ‘exceptional governor’ cast doubt on her current promises to tackle fraud.

Klobuchar’s campaign has recently focused on her commitment to addressing fraud, including a pledge in a campaign ad to initiate a state audit on her first day in office. However, Demuth and other Republicans question why such measures weren’t taken earlier in her career.

Republicans in Minnesota, including Senate hopeful Michele Tafoya, claim voters across political lines are dissatisfied with the fraud scandal and are seeking change. Demuth asks the voters to decide who they trust more to handle fraud issues—Klobuchar, or someone like her who has consistently prioritized combating fraud.

Klobuchar’s campaign has not yet commented on the criticism. The public continues to anticipate how the scandal will influence the upcoming gubernatorial election and whether Klobuchar’s strategy will sway voters.
