Republican Rep. Cory Mills of Florida recently faced controversy as the latest incumbent removed in party primaries this year. According to the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, twelve House members and two Senators lost their renomination bids in the 2026 midterms.
Kyle Kondik, Communications Director at the Center for Politics, highlighted the significant number of incumbents defeated outside a full national redistricting year. Redistricting and other factors like scandals and party dynamics played roles in these losses. Some GOP lawmakers were targeted by President Donald Trump, while a push for generational change and more left-wing candidates from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) contributed to the changes.
Democratic shifts included Michigan Rep. Shri Thanedar losing to DSA challenger Donavan McKinney, and Rep. Dan Goldman of New York defeated by progressive Brad Lander. New York’s Adriano Espaillat was ousted by DSA member Darializa Avila Chevalier, with ideology and age as key factors. In Colorado, Melat Kiros won against moderate Rep. Diana Degette; generational differences explained the success of candidates like Christian Menefee in Texas over Al Green. Similar age dynamics were seen as younger candidates, like Luke Bronin, defeated long-serving figures like John Larson in Connecticut.
President Trump influenced some Republican races. His neutral stance maintained, but backing Ken Paxton in Texas, who defeated John Cornyn, was significant. Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana faced consequences for past decisions against Trump, leading to his defeat. Notable Republican defeats included Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky losing to Ed Gallrein, with Crenshaw in Texas facing defeat from Steve Toth, and Andy Ogles of Tennessee losing to Charlie Hatcher despite Trump’s endorsement. Ogles’ loss involved controversial comments that attracted widespread criticism.
In Florida’s 7th Congressional District, Mills was defeated by Ryan Elijah in a four-way primary. Elijah criticized Mills over suspect ethics, including allegations of threatening behavior, though Mills denied the claims. While Trump endorsed him, it wasn’t enough to ensure his renomination.
Additionally, Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales ended his campaign amid scandal, resigning from Congress following personal revelations and pressure from peers. This represents a blend of generational, political, and personal challenges reshaping the current political landscape.
