Wealthy Californians are increasingly looking beyond the U.S. for residency and citizenship. Many find themselves worried about political instability. A significant number are choosing to invest capital abroad.
Increasing Interest in Citizenship by Investment
The demand for citizenship by investment surged notably in 2020. During pandemic lockdowns, many felt restricted by the limits on nonresidents. Interest spiked again in 2024 when political changes amplified concerns, especially from states like California.
Understanding Golden Visas
A golden visa, or citizenship by investment, involves investing substantial funds into a country. This can be through property or direct investment. It offers a streamlined path to residency or citizenship. Currently, Californians account for up to 20% of global clients seeking new residency.
“This is a little bit like having an insurance policy,” said Paul Williams of La Vida Golden Visas.
Additional residency is often considered a backup plan. Many programs do not require full-time residency. This flexibility appeals to many who are uncertain about future political climates.
European and New Zealand Options
Portugal is a favored destination in Europe. Families typically invest around 500,000 euros in Portuguese ventures. Citizenship can take over a decade but opens doors to the European Union. There are also business investment options requiring less capital.
New Zealand attracts interest for its quicker process. An investment of NZD 5 million allows for permanent residency in as little as three years.
Other California Developments
California’s environment faces challenges with rising disease cases from mosquitoes. Aging residents are affecting household sizes. The state reconsiders its stance on nuclear energy amid growing power demands.
